Jon Kelly

"Jazz is my Lifestyle"

Jonathan Jon Maurice Kelly . . . Born May 29, 1981, Jonathan lived most of his young life in Gary, IN. He was gifted his first drum set at age 3. For the average child, this is merely a noise maker, however, Jon learned early to make a joyful noise, and began playing in rhythm. By age 9, Jon started playing the piano, taught by his father, Claude Kelly, III, and his mother, Jamia Lynn. In 1991, he relocated with his mother and step-father to Prospect Heights, IL, where he attended Wheeling High School and eventually moved to Waukegan, IL and graduated from Waukegan High School. While in high school, Jon served as a band percussionist. There he learned to read music for all percussion instruments including but not limited to - xylophone, vibes, tympani, snare, bass, and quads. During these years, at age 16, Jon began developing his skills by playing in blues settings. After graduating high school, Jon attended Columbia College in Chicago, IL. as an Audio Production major. During this time he continued building his gift by playing in church settings. Soon after, he went on to teach others to read music. Jons musical gift and talent was inspired by God, life, and nature (mainly water) and pre-destined. As his mother and father are both great musicians, songwriters, singers and producers, this mantle fell definitely on him. Both of his parents descend from musically inclined generations, thus, his call to music cannot be escaped. Jon is greatly encouraged by the accomplishments, abilities and great works of his father, Claude Kelly, III, and his mother, Jamia Lynn Miles. Jons father has written and produced on major projects, and otherwise collaborated with various artists such as BB & CC Winnans, Commissioned, Steve Camp, 4Him, Cross Movement, June Evans & SWV, Gladys Knight, Lou Rawls, and Petra. Jons mother has written, co-produced and is featured artist on her own album, Great & Might; she has also written, produced and performed on other major projects, and otherwise collaborated with various artists including Donny McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Smokie Norful, Darius Brooks, Percy Brady, V. Michael McKay, Thompson Community Singers (The Tommies), Bishop T.D. Jakes, Kim Stratton, Dan Willis & POC, Bishop James Abney & the Bethel Pentecostal Church, Craig Tyson (Ty-Scott Records), Henry Neal, Indiana State Choir (under the direction of Mattie Moss-Clark), Illinois State Choir, Michael Jordan Ensemble, and The Treble Clefs. Jons parents are educated and professionally trained in and teachers of classical music, music theory, and production; and have both conducted multiple, successful, musical workshops across the nation from Los Angeles, CA, to Dallas, TX, to New York, NY, and various locations in between. Although young in his career, Jon has extensive experience in this line of work. He too has developed a portfolio of collaborations with artists including his mother, Jamia Lynn Miles, for whom he produced the title song for her album, Great & Mighty, released in 2005; he also produced much of the work for the album Arison Walton & POR, released 2010. He has also worked with various artists including Richard Smallwood, Dorinda Clark-Cole, and John P. Kee, Gina Thurston, Michael Coleman, and others. Besides his parents, Jon is also motivated by the works of his uncle, Terry Garmon, and other renowned artists such as Art Tatum, Nat King Cole, Ramsey Lewis, Fatts Walker, David Benoit, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, George Duke, Norman Brown, Kenny G., Joe Sample, Donny & Layla Hathaway, Wayman Tisdale, Yellow Jackets, Spyro Gyra, Brian Culbertson, Dave Koz, George Benson to name a few. Jon is also moved and driven to succeed by his 4 beautiful daughters, whom he loves unconditionally, and immeasurably. Jons first project, Rescue Me, is scheduled for release in January 2012. Although his first, it is definitely not his last. As he endeavors to continue and grow in his second love, music Christ being his first Jons second and third projects are already in the making. As you listen, absorb, admire and experience the musical genius of Love Collection: Volume One and Rescue Me(coming soon), you will surely add him to your list of Favorite musicians.
