Jonathan Allentoff is a nationally acclaimed conductor, composer, performer, and educator. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude, in Interdisciplinary Arts for Children with a Concentration in Music and an Applied Music Minor from The College at Brockport, State University of New York. A graduate of the college's Delta College Program, he is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, the School of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award, and was named the Interdisciplinary Arts for Children Departmental Scholar. He is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with a Concentration in Musical Arts at The College at Brockport. He studies conducting and composition with Dr. William Hullfish, music education with Dr. Natalie Sarrazin and Mr. Kevin Warner, and violin & viola performance with Dr. Thomas Saul. He has studied theory with Dr. Herbert Wise and conducting technique with Mrs. Dianne Howard.
Jonathan is the director and violinist for the Brockport String Trio and sings in the Brockport College-Community Chorus. He performs as principal viola with the Brighton and Greece Symphony Orchestras, and violin in the Finger Lakes Choral Festival summer performances with the Penfield Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as viola soloist with the Greece Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of Brighton Symphony's Rococo Project Ensemble, where he performs on a period violin and viola. He performed as principal viola in the Director's Orchestra at the NYSSMA/NYASTA Summer Conference and as a jazz/pop violist in the APME Jam Session at the University of Southern California's Carson Center. He was also invited to perform on viola in the Roberto Occhipinti Quartet Jazz Masterclass and in Paul Gaspar's Eastman Recital Orchestra. Jonathan has been a guest teaching artist at local elementary and high schools, and serves as music director of the Brockport Youth String Orchestra. He teaches string lessons and mentors advanced college performers through independent study courses.
Jonathan recently completed orchestral and choral arrangements of Van Alexander's new Christmas song, It Comes Around the Same Time Each Year, and conducted the premiere performances. He was commissioned to compose and conduct a new jazz score for the DANSCORE ballet, “Louie Strong, P. I., One Evening… 1940’s… Rochester, NY,” with choreography by Dr. Darwin Prioleau. He was also commissioned to compose the scores for two films produced by the State University of New York. Jonathan has participated in conferences and festivals at the University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, Texas Christian University, Baldwin Wallace University, Catalina's Jazz Club in Hollywood, and The Kennedy Center, working with such musicians as Joshua Bell, Lamont Dozier, Ralph Grierson, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Robert McCashin, Walter Murphy, David Newman, Ney Rosauro, and Franz Welser-Most. He has also conducted film score research at the Charles E. Young Research Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, Cinematic Arts Library at the University of Southern California, and the Warner Bros. Archives, and was invited to attend a private scoring session at Warner Bros. Studios. His conference presentations include Music and Dance, The Science of Sound, Musical Voices of the Native Americans, Collaborative Arts, The Musical Legacy of Hollywood, Educational Conducting Techniques, and The Brockport String Trio - Latin American Music Performance.
His works have been performed by members of the League of American Orchestras, summer youth orchestras, and college and professional orchestras across the United States as well as in Australia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Jonathan distributes his music through his own ASCAP music publishing business, Allentoff Music www.allentoffmusic.com. His arrangements of American popular standards, holiday songs, and film soundtracks are licensed through Warner Bros. and Alfred Publishing, Chappell & Co., Ludlow Music, Stratford Music Corporation, Universal Music/Criterion Music Corporation, and Taradam Music. The 2008 NYSSMA Conference performance of his "Divertimento for Two Violins and String Orchestra" was recorded and distributed by Mark Custom Recording. His recordings as conductor are distributed across the globe by CD Baby, Amazon, and iTunes. Jonathan is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, College Orchestra Directors Association, American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers, National Association for Music Education, New York State School Music Association, American String Teachers Association, and the Association for Popular Music Education.
