Haven been compared to other pianists such as Jim Brickman and George Winston, Joseph Akins blends his southern roots with a variety of musical styles to create a unique sound of his own. With four currently available albums, A Southern Sun is the most recent. A Piano Christmas (2011) was nominated as Best Holiday Album of the Year at SoloPiano.com. Both Spirit Touch (2009) and Masterpeace (2007) have received worldwide acclaim. The former was included in the Decade’s Top 40 at mainlypiano.com.
In his life, Joseph has performed with many jazz, rock and country groups as a piano and keyboard player. Even recently, he performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN with legendary singer, John Conlee. But most of his engagements these days are intimate performances of his original piano music at homes, recital halls, and churches, often performing with similar pianists such as David Lanz, David Nevue, and Philip Wesley.
Joseph is also an award-winning professor of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University where he teaches courses in audio production. He holds advanced degrees in jazz piano and electronic music from the University of Tennessee and Radford University, and a doctorate in education from Tennessee State University.
