Joseph Akins blends his roots with a variety of musical styles to create a sound that is recognizable and noted in today’s contemporary solo piano genre. To date, he has released four solo piano albums. The most recent, A Southern Sun, made the Top 30 Favorites of 2013 at MainlyPiano.com and was nominated for Album of the Year at Enlightened Piano Radio. His holiday album, A Piano Christmas, was nominated for Best Holiday Album of Year 2011 at SoloPiano.com, and in 2009, Spirit Touch, was awarded as one of the Top 30 Favorites of the Year and Top 40 Albums of the Decade at MainlyPiano.com. In 2014, “Masterpeace” (the title track from the 2007 album Masterpeace) was listed in the 50 Best Piano Songs of All Time at Reviews New Age. His music is continually heard on radio stations such as Pandora and Whisperings Solo Piano Radio.
Joseph’s music career began as a keyboard and saxophone player for country-rock, pop and jazz bands, but most of his engagements these days are intimate performances of his original piano music at homes, recital halls, churches and similar settings. In addition to being an active performer and composer, he is an award-winning associate professor of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University where he teaches courses in music production. He holds bachelor and master’s degrees in music and a doctorate in education from the University of Tennessee, Radford University, Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University.
