Josh Klein & Friends appeared in various line-ups and formations between 2003-2008 in Boston. Josh, being a self-proclaimed improvisor, wanted to form a group free of rules, forms and restrictions of popular music, and so JK&F was the perfect outlet. These avant-funk punky jazz songs each have their own colorful layers that portray the mysticism and beauty in the world. These recordings are now available for download and streaming.
Disc One of the master compilation was initially billed as "Trio". The original record was 10 tracks, featuring Josh on guitar, Dave McDonald on drum kit and Scott Killick on bass. Dave has toured the world with Air Force jazz band, The Airmen of Note. Killick was a member of the former StickBottle Band (which Josh wrote music and played guitar for until 2006).
Disc Two was titled "The Wellspring Session" after the studio we recorded it in. 31 tracks, this disc has it all, and feature the most seasoned JK&F line-up. Trombonist Scott Flynn went on to tour with John Brown's Body, Pretty Lights and Elephant Wrecking ball, and saxophonist Luke Penella has opened up Penella Saxophones in NYC. Will Kelly moved on to play bass for the USAF Jazz Band, and Nic Rochefort (drum kit) came to us as former Canadian Idol House Band drummer. Also a great performance out of trumpet player and recording engineer, Stefan Colson. He and Josh edited, mixed and mastered the record.
Disc Three is the bonus live disc, "Live @ Rutman's Violin Shop". This one includes yet another line-up, with Jesse Beigel on percussion, and Alex Busby Smith on bass. Once again, Nic Rochefort is behind the drum kit. Beigel has gone on to work for the Music Therapy Department at Berklee College of Music.
