Josh Mason

Joshua James Timu Walcott-Mason, performing as 'Josh Mason', is a singer-songwriter musician from Wellington New Zealand. Drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of acoustic pop, rock and new-age artists, his music typically emphasises classical chord progressions and lyrical themes centred around the human condition and philosophy.

Josh Mason first began producing and performing solo musical material in 2007 as part of a highschool project. Prior to this he had been involved in a number of bands playing guitar, keyboards and drums. His first release was the 7 track EP, 'An Excerpt Of Lost Misinterpretations', released under the name 'The Zorath Megafield Project'. The EP was entirely self-produced, with all instruments being performed and recorded by Josh Mason. Stylistically the songs drew influences from heavy metal and acoustic music.

As The Zorath Megafield Project, Josh Mason performed the songs from the EP at a few local gigs with a live band.

Josh Mason's next release was the full length debut album 'One Day', released at the end of 2009. The album saw Josh Mason carrying out the duties of bass, electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards and vocals, with percussion performed by Callum Gay and backing vocals featuring Karl Lavo and Rosie Herdman. All recording, mixing and mastering was done through STL Audio in Wellington. Josh Mason described One Day as a conceptual album, using night and day as a metaphor for the combination of heavier and lighter music contained on the album. It also marks the transition in Josh Mason's style from a more aggressive heavy-metal style to a vocal focussed brand of acoustic-rock songwriting.

Over the next few years Josh Mason assisted on guitar and drums in the Wellington melodic metal band 'Intergracia', all the while performing solo acoustic gigs at local venues. In March 2011 he began work on a new EP from his bedroom in Pukerua Bay. The new 4 track EP, 'Set Sail To A Light' was mastered at STL Audio February 2012 and was made available primarily for digital download, although a limited number of physical copies were also released. Josh Mason is set to perform the material off the EP, along with other new material, with a new live band line-up throughout 2012. Also planned is a follow-up album entitled 'Celestial', featuring the 4 songs from the EP and 8 previously unreleased tracks.
