It is said eyes are windows to the soul. But the windows to Kaisha Lee’s soul are her powerful voice, introspective lyrics and harmonious melodies.
From playing piano since age six to hearing her dad sing tunes from their native Jamaica, music was always in Kaisha’s life. It might have been destined then that, at 15, Kaisha (also known as Kaysha) began to nurture her voice through participation in gospel choirs. Eventually, she toured Canada, the U.S. and France with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, received a Gemini award as part of the Sharon Riley and Faith Chorale and performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration. Kaisha also worked as a vocal and piano theory teacher. She credits these experiences with helping her to embark, in summer 2009, on a solo career.
With a fusion of mid to up-tempo reggae and soul-influenced R&B, Kaisha’s song topics range from life’s ups and downs to love. Since 2009, she has released a number of singles, including Pirates in the Ship (featuring rapper QuandoN), Take Me From Disgrace and 3 Weeks — the latter two received spins on Caribbean radio stations. In 2010, she also dropped a demo mixtape, Undefined. From it, Kaisha remixed Just to Be With You and Heart of a NinJah, and released a video for the former. Kaisha’s most recent Video released was for her single ‘Clean Heart Order’. A positive soulful dancehall track. The most recent single is entitled ‘Rise Above It’. All of Kaisha’s music is available through iTunes, amazon and most digital outlets; also SoundCloud & YouTube, and other digital avenues.
Meanwhile, as a mesmerizing live entertainer, Kaisha has performed at Toronto outlets such as Afrofest, Trane Studio jazz lounge and Follow Your Instinct’s talent showcase as well as New York City’s most well known open mic nights at the Village Underground and has called Montreal’s Le Piano Rouge Lounge a “musical home” in 2012 and 2013.
In September 2010, Kaisha staged a successful showcase in England. During the trip, she also conducted media interviews and collaborated with British artists. Continuing her travels, Kaisha then made a move to Jamaica, where she embedded herself in the recording process and music scene — performing at Suzie’s Bakery in Kingston, opening for controversial poet Mutabaruka and celebrating Haile Selassie I’s visit to Jamaica by singing at Tuff Gong Studios.
Since her return to Canada in 2012, the singer has opened for top Jamaican artist I-Octane at Montreal’s Club Soda for Little Thunder Sounds 20th anniversary and also Veteran Reggae Artist Luciano at the Belmont. She’s also performed and played piano at local restaurants and lounges, such as Devi, Club Balattou, The Windsor Sports Bar & Grill & Le Piano Rouge Lounge. She is also did some Jazz studies at the local university. This summer she opened for Reggae star Etana at the Montreal International Reggae Festival. Altho she is ‘gigging’ and continues to work with producers on riddim tracks, Kaisha’s current focus is on her own album, which has a digital release date of December 20th 2014. Album Launches in Montreal and Toronto are scheduled for December 5th & 17th. ‘I Heart Reggae’ will be available for Pre-Sale November 22nd 2014.
With an infectious sound, stunning looks and a charming personality, Kaisha Lee is letting the world see her soul, one lyric at a time.
