Biography

Karine Gil is an international concert pianist, composer, piano teacher and Ecologist, PhD. She studied music at the National Conservatory of Music "Juan Jose Landaeta", in Caracas, Venezuela from 1970 to 1983, where she studied piano with Beatriz Vegas (graduated from the Mannes College of Music N.Y. and former student of Mme. Vengerova). After graduation, Karine continued piano lessons in Venezuela with Harriet Serr (USA), and international visiting professors, such as Regina Smendzianka (Poland) and Walter Blackenheim (Germany). She complemented her musical studies with advanced courses of pedagogy, scenic arts, music-therapy and piano improvisation.

In 1989 she founded and directed the music school FUNDACEM (Fundación Centro de Estudios Musicales “Karine Gil de Weir”), with a 1st center in San Antonio de los Altos (300 students), and a 2nd center in Maracaibo (100 students). Karine has taught music at pre-school, elementary, middle school, and college levels. She taught at the J. Luis Paz Conservatory in Maracaibo, where her advanced level students participated in national piano competitions (4 winners) and performed piano concerts with the Symphonic Orchestra of Maracaibo.

Karine’s current artistic activities include annual solo piano recitals of Music of Venezuela, Spain and of her own compositions in different venues: she has performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of Conservatory "Juan Jose Landaeta" conducted by Pablo Castellano and with the Zulia Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Jerzy Luckaszewski. she has performed piano recitals at Texas A&M University, at the Music Museum of Stockholm, Sweden, and at the University of Juarez, Durango, Mexico.

In 2000, Karine was awarded the recognition "Valor Artistico del Zulia" (merit towards the arts, State of Zulia, Venezuela). Karine resides in the United States since 2002, and is an active member of the Music Teachers National Association.

Karine received a BA in Biology (Universidad Simon Bolivar, 1984), a Master in Applied Ecology (Universidad del Zulia, 2000), and a Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries - Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences (Texas A&M University, 2005). She held a postdoctoral position at the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, between 2006-2007,and was ecologist at the Crane Trust, in Nebraska. Karine's expertise is in ecology of birds.
However, her life is always combined with music, performing and teaching.
