Kristyn Harris, 18, of Collin County Texas, is the winner of the 2012 Western Music Association CRESCENDO AWARD. She has a passion for all things cowboy and western swing, inspired by the music of classic and contemporary western icons as well as her own ranch life. Kristyn is noted for her singing, songwriting, sock rhythm guitar style, big bass thumping, and yodeling (named the WMA Female Yodeler of the Year in 2012). Her performances reflect her love and understanding of the land and ranching culture of her native state.
Kristyn’s horses are also one of her big musical inspirations. By age 12 she became an active member of her County 4H club, eventually garnering the 4H National Championship for Hippology (the study of horses) with her team in 2011. Kristyn found her love of training when in 2008 she adopted a wild mustang filly who she successfully gentled and brought under saddle herself. She rides Velvet in everything from parades to cattle drives and has a close bond with her mare. She loved the experience so much that she recently adopted a second mustang yearling with which she competed in the 2012 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth.
Kristyn was the winner of the Rising Star Competition at the 2011 Kamloops Cowboy Festival in British Columbia, and was also a 2012 Top Five finalist for Academy of Western Artists Female Performer of the Year. She has performed on national television as part of RFD-TV’s Shotgun Red Variety Show and on Nickelodeon’s popular game show, “FIGURE IT OUT”. She also appears at venues local and across the United States and Canada, past ones most notably including: Red Steagall’s Cowboy Gathering in Fort Worth; the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Alpine; the National Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock; the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, NV; the Durango Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering in Colorado; Los Angeles’ Autry Museum of Western Heritage; Kenton Ohio’s “Gene Autry Days”; and Michael Martin Murphey’s Texas Cowboy Christmas Ball. She has even played onstage with legendary western swing band, “The Texas Playboys” at the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, NM. Kristyn loves the music she performs and brings to the stage a warm, genuine, and energetic personality that never fails to delight her audiences!
