Smooth. Simmery. Soulful. Lara Oshon delivers lush piano-vocals with lyrical soul, igniting devoted supporters from California to Australia. Her rich, warm voice and rhythmic piano stylings flow right through your heart, creating a transforming musical experience.
There are two kinds of music – the kind that rushes out to meet you, and the kind that invites you to come inside and sit down awhile. Lara Oshon (rhymes with 'ocean') creates the latter. Her songs emanate a warm power that draws you inward toward them, compelling you to slow down and really listen. She evokes deep emotional resonance through every song, while simultaneously reassuring you that your heart is in good hands.
With frequent comparisons to Karen Carpenter and Carole King, Lara’s music and voice are reminiscent of the golden era of 1970s singer-songwriters whose songs were thoughtful, classic and well-crafted. Her poetic lyricism, soulful delivery and playful spunk could be a modern cross between Sarah McLachlan and Sara Bareilles, uniquely combining elements of folk, new soul, pop and indie rock. Lara’s authentic earthiness comes from her roots in Georgia, while her carefree spirit found its home in the California sunshine.
As a singer, songwriter, painter and classically trained pianist Lara is a consummate artist, although her route has been an unconventional one. She originally moved to Los Angeles for graduate school to become a therapist, but discovered her visual and vocal gifts after an experience swimming with wild dolphins. Lara never expected to dedicate her life to performance, but says “the creative force just took me over. I sing because my soul demands it.” Since that life changing experience she has performed and recorded with numerous top musicians in California and the Southeast, and devoted supporters from California to Australia fully funded her third album, Born to Shine, through a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Lara is passionate about the power of live music: “Music is a universal force. It’s a language that unifies us.” Her fourth album, I Will Sing: Live at Sangha, was recorded with a live audience inside an old church turned yoga studio - Sangha Yoga Studio in Athens, GA - and the acoustics are stellar. “The word Sangha means ‘community’ in Sanskrit,” Lara says, “and these songs are meant to create connection - to our own hearts and to each other. In a live show, there’s a heightened sense of relationship between singer and audience. It’s intimate, authentic, unforgettable. That’s what my music is about.” I Will Sing is the second time she has produced while living in Athens.
Lara is excited to continue experimenting in new directions. “My life always surprises me. It’s an amazing adventure.” An eternally curious free spirit, Lara has been a Spanish interpreter, a basketball player in Australia, an urban teaching assistant, a web designer, a communications consultant and a children’s adoption social worker. Lara is now back on the west coast and recording new music.
“I’ve discovered that nothing brings me greater joy than connecting with people through music. Music has been a healing, guiding force for my entire life. What I most want is for my sound to truly benefit others.”
