Since 1992 Lenoir Sax has performed jazz and classical chamber music for diverse audiences throughout North Carolina and beyond. The group is heard on public radio stations including WETS, WNCW, and WDAV in the US and in Scotland through NPR cultural exchange programming. Lenoir Sax has earned invitations to open for the Tommy Dorsey Band and the North Carolina Symphony and to perform with the Loonis McGlohon Trio and the Asheville Symphony. Lenoir Sax has also appeared throughout Austria where they represented the United States at the KaiserFest in Bad Ischl, they have recorded with Paul Weber and the Lenoir-Rhyne A Cappella Choir on Evangelical Lutheran Worship, Hymns Audio CD, volume 2 (Augsburg), were featured as soloists with the Western Piedmont Symphony (October 2012) featuring the music of Warren Barker, and were selected to perform at the 2013 International Saxophone Symposium at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA in a performance featuring the newly commissioned arrangements by Asheville, NC composer David Wilken.
Dedicated to new music, Lenoir Sax has commissioned and premiered works by NC composers J. Mark Scearce, James Gossler, Joseph Dorsch, Frank Graham Stewart, and David Wilken.
The group's newest CD project, High Standards, pays homage to the Hollywood Sax Quartet with new arrangements of jazz standards by David Wilken, an amazing young composer/arranger based in Asheville, NC. Lenoir Sax has four previous recordings: Wade in the Water, Christmas... Classically Cool, Fascinatin' Rhythms, and Nightcap.
The members of Lenoir Sax are Robert George, soprano and alto sax; Jenny Lanier, alto sax; Patrick Brown, tenor sax; and Michael Myers, baritone sax.
