The London Klezmer Quartet is a dynamic group of four performers much in demand on the UK folk, world and pop music scenes. Their deep understanding of klezmer, the celebratory and soulful music of Eastern European Jews, is reflected in exuberant, passionate and accomplished performances that captivate audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Ilana Cravitz, violin
Ilana has introduced hundreds of people of all ages to klezmer through courses and workshops at universities and conservatoires, and at events like the Genius of the Violin Festival and Fiddles on Fire. She specialises in organising and performing in klezmer keilidhs under the banner ‘Hopkele’, and also enjoys forays into the world of Sephardic music, Flamenco, and Celtic fiddling. Ilana studied baroque violin at postgraduate level at the Royal College of Music, and has toured and recorded with the European Union Baroque Orchestra, The Sixteen, and Victoria Voices and Viols.
Susi Evans, clarinet
Susi graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a first class degree in 2004. Much in demand for concerts and recordings with international artists as well as on the West End stage, her performances with the She’Koyokh Klezmer Ensemble, a group which she co-founded, have inspired press reviews remarking on her “nimble solo features and excellent tone control” (The Scottish Herald), and “infectious enthusiasm” (Oxford Times). Susi travels regularly for work and pleasure, and has studied in Istanbul with acclaimed clarinettist Selim Sesler.
Carol Isaacs, piano accordion
A classically-trained pianist, keyboard player and accordionist, Carol works in the pop and world music fields. She has recorded and toured with many international artists including Sinead O’Connor (Ireland), The Indigo Girls (US), Natacha Atlas (Egypt), Abdel Ali Slimani (Algeria), Ahmed Mukhtar (Iraq) and Phongsit Khampee (Thailand). Carol also plays accordion with Francesca Ter-Berg in the duo, Kavona, who specialise in traditional klezmer music and is part of ‘Yalla’, an all-female interfaith Muslim and Jewish Hip Hop Klezmer collaboration.
Francesca Ter-Berg, cello
Francesca is an explorer of musical genres, from klezmer to Indian classical music, Arabic Maqam to Jazz and Gypsy music. She has studied across the world with renowned musicians, most recently the legendary Manouche maestro Tcha Limberger. In London, Francesca performs regularly with klezmer duo Kavona, Kora player Mosi Conde, and master Oud player Ahmed Mukhtar. In 2009/10 she has performed in venues ranging from major concert halls - including the Royal Festival Hall - to summer music festivals such as Glastonbury.
