Luke Malewicz (Trombone), born in Nowa Sol, Poland on April 7, 1984, began trombone lessons at the age of seven and at age nine, took up the piano. He studied under the direction of Janusz Gabryjelski, who not only taught Luke trombone but also music theory and aural skills. Before moving to the United States in 1994 he had already performed throughout Poland, Germany and Belgium with a youth concert band (Młodzieżowa Orkiestra Dęta Zespołu Szkół Elektrycznych). Upon his arrival in Chicago Luke continued to practice while learning English and acclimating to the culture. It wasn’t until his first day of high school that he fell in love with jazz, having never heard it in Poland.
He showed exceptional talent being selected for the IMEA Jazz Band all four years of high school and the All State Conference his junior and senior year. Luke was also a member of the Youth Jazz Ensemble of Dupage, attending the Essentially Ellington Competition, and the Chicago Youth Jazz Ensemble.
Urged by his private teacher, Tim Coffman, Luke attended Indiana University where he was a member of the David Baker Jazz Ensemble. After graduating in 2007 with a BM in Jazz Performance and a Performers Certificate, he moved to New York where he received his Masters in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music. While attending MSM, Luke studied with Steve Turre, Luis Bonilla, and Elliot Mason. He also performed with the MSM Jazz Orchestra and Grammy Award Nominated Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra at various prestigious venues including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and Carnegie Hall.
After graduation in 2009 Luke moved to Chicago where he currently resides as a freelance trombonist and educator. He teaches at various Chicago area schools and colleges and performs at some of Chicago’s best jazz venues including Andy’s Jazz Club, the Jazz Showcase, and the Green Mill. He has also performed throughout the Midwest including Cliff Bell’s in Detroit and the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis.
Luke is a sought after clinician/guest artist as well. Some of his clinics and guest performances include the Downers Groove North High School, Oswego High School, Northern Illinois University and Indiana University. He has performed with, Ingrid Jensen, Stefon Harris, David Liebman, Elliot Mason, The Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, the Rob Parton Big Band, Mary Wilson, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and the Grammy Award Winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
Among his current projects Luke performs with his own group, the Luke Malewicz Quintet as well as the Tim Seisser Quintet and S. Joel Norman. The Luke Malewicz quintet is comprised of some of the most talented musicians in the city and performs mainly original compositions. Luke’s unique style of composition relies heavily on melody and rhythm without complexity to keep even the most novice listener engaged in the music. The quintets debut CD will be coming out later this summer.
