Lunatic Fringe grew out of the collaboration of Fred Simmons and Karl Wilson, who decided to explore the relationship between their instruments, the trombone and tuba. They followed this direction down to New Orleans, experiencing the Mardi Gras down there in 2005, where they saw how those 2 instruments carried the Mardi Gras spirit on the streets of the fabled city. Back in New Hampshire they added members one at a time--first Barbara Leavy on balafon and dun-dun. Barbara is a student of music from W. Africa, so they incorporated the tunes she brought in. Then they added Phillip Sherwood on guitar, which gave them the harmonic and rhythmic center that allowed them to expand. Finally they added percussionist Tara Greenblatt, who was the perfect addition to round out the band and fill out the sound.
They play in and around the Monadnock region of Southern NH with a lively, infectious, free-wheeling sound that this recording captures well.
