Singer-songwriter Mac Comer has come a long way from his days as Knoxville’s “local hippie dude” who played a mean set of bongos and kicked up a dust storm on the acoustic guitar. For the past eight years, Mac Comer’s lifting Southern twang has packed out crowds in and around the Southeast. But it’s his persistent “do it yourself” approach to promoting himself that has earned him recognition by fans all over the world.
Comer’s staple is found in Knoxville, TN where he began showcasing his music. As a young singer-songwriter, he promoted himself vigorously by spending countless hours singing his heart out at the local “open mice nights” around town. As Comer’s popularity grew, he landed spots amongst Knoxville’s premier music venues. In 2005, Comer released his debut album, Something New. Shortly following the release, The Daily Beacon complimented Comer’s galloping score by calling it a “genre-crossing tribute to folksy guitar rock, in the stylings of Jason Mraz, Keller Williams, and Widespread Panic. In 2008, Comer paired up with Knoxville’s own Cruz Contreras to release his second album, Trails of My Town. Just recently, Johnson City’s Tricities.com applauded Comer for “his slashing guitar style that evokes Daves Matthews crossed with Richie Havens…and his raspy voice that seemingly borrows from no one.” He’s a magician of folk. Or a jester, juggling harmonica licks and crafty guitar rifts.
Comer continues to satisfy his hunger for success. In August, Comer received his Master’s in Elementary Education at the University of Tennessee and is currently working as an elementary teacher in Knoxville, TN. WUTK radio’s general manager, Benny Smith, credits Comer’s success from his hard work, passion, and dedication both on the off the stage. Writing new songs, maintaining his website, promoting his tunes, and managing his music appears to keep his plate full. But the starving artist is far from satisfied. Comer’s latest project consists of a four-piece ensemble influenced by jazz, funk, and galloping folk. So grab and beer and head up to the front row! What are you waiting for?
