Los Angeles- based Mai Gai Venus is the solo project of female vocalist/songwriter/audio engineer, An Geneva. Influenced by film sound and cinematic post production techniques, An was inspired to produce a musical project that created a visual through the aural experience. Mai Gai Venus is dark, yet whimsical. Machine driven, yet human in its emotional drive. Modern, futuristic, and reminiscent of a bygone era. The musical soundscape can take either a new age sci-fi or mysterious film noir formation, through dissonant, lo-fi, distorted or hybrid sounds. Just as the listener is engaged in the dark sonic adventure, the journey can end abruptly or take sudden turns. The versatility of An’s writing and performance is shown in genre-bending instrumental compositions as well as vocals, and makes obscure classical and literary references (such as to “The Imp of the Perverse” by Edgar Allan Poe and Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”). Elements of classical, new age, jazz, goth, industrial, synthpop, and trip hop weave a cohesive blend in An’s writing.
