Mari Tochi was born in Tokyo and grew up in Fukui, Japan. When she was 11, she won first prize in Suginokidai Singing Contest, Fukui, Japan; later, she won second prize at the Waseda University Singing Contest, Tokyo, Japan. She won third prize (first prize as the only singer) at the International Harlem Cultural Arts Festival in November 2006.
She fell in love with jazz while studying abroad in Nebraska. After returning to Japan, she made her debut as a professional jazz vocalist at Tokyo's world-famous “Shinjuku Pit Inn,” and Mari soon became a fixture on the Japanese jazz scene.
In 2002, Mari returned to America to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, having won a World Scholarship. When Mari sang at Patti Austin’s Berklee College clinic, Ms. Austin embraced her and exclaimed, “Where did you learn jazz? You have an amazing attitude!”
A Japanese traditional dancer and choreographer, she has performed as well with the “Noh” Opera at the World Premiere of “Kantan” and The Streets of Japan, at the Danny Kaye Playhouse in New York in 2003. One of her projects is to mix the sounds, words and art of both East and West.
Mari’s first album, ありがとう[aligato] was recorded with N.Y. Yong Lions and Lionesses such as Francisco Mela (dr.) for Joe Lovano, John Scofield, and Kenny Barron, Ferenc Nemeth (dr.) for Lionel Loueke, Megumi Yonezawa (p.) for Greg Osby, Ben Williams (b.) for Stefon Harris and Jacky Terrasson, and more. She did share [aligato] spirit with many audience for the CD Release Show at the "Blue Note,"for her first appearance on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009.
東京生まれ、福井育ち。
１１歳で地元のど自慢大会で優勝。早稲田大学２年時、キャンパスの歌唱コンテストで二位受賞。その後１年間の米ネブラスカの大学留学中、聖歌隊に所属し、ジャズに巡り会う。 帰国後、新宿ピット・イン・デビュー。 その後脱サラし、歌の道に専念。日本のジャズ・ライブハウス、ラジオ、ＴＶに出演するが、ステップアップを志し、２００２年に再渡米を決意。出発前に茶道、民謡、和太鼓を習い、日本人の心と魂（ソウル）を再確認し、海を渡った。
ボストンのバークリー音楽院でワールド・スカラシップを得て、声楽、アレンジ、音楽理論などを学ぶ。在学中、来校したパティー・オースティンの前で、『How High The Moon』を歌い、“Where Did You Learn Jazz? You have an amazing attitude! ”と称賛を受ける。
２００３年、ニョーヨーク「ダニー・ケイ・ホール」で上演された世界初の能オペラに出演し、歌手、ソロ能舞、振りつけをこなす。和と洋の音、言葉、そして芸術の融合が彼女のテーマのひとつである。
２００６年の第四回ハーレム国際文化・芸術フェスティバルで、歌では最高位の、第３位を受賞。
２００９年５月に、アメリカ生活の結晶と言うべき、オリジナル曲中心の初アルバム『ありがとう』をリリースした。以前から交友のあるドラムスのフランシスコ・メラ（マッコイ・ターナークインテット、ケニー・バロントリオ等）、フランク・ネメス（ライオネル・ルーエケトリオ等）、そしてピアノの米澤恵実（グレッグ・オズビー等）らを含むニューヨークヤングライオン達と独自の『杤まりワールド』を表現した。
そして、２００９年１０月１１日に、ブルーノート初登場にて、『ありがとう』スピリット一杯に、パワフル＆ソウルフルかつ繊細なCDリリース・ショーを繰り広げた。
今後もジャンルにとらわれない世界的な活躍がますます期待される。
