Almost any one of the many tools at the disposal of Indie rockers Mathien could lead to a successful modern band. The clever tongue-in-cheek observational song lyrics, a band of musicians who seem bred to experiment in every possible musical style, and a versatile vocalist equally comfortable crooning a soul ballad or shifting to hip hop. Put them together and you’re no longer talking about a potentially successful band but a potentially great one. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Mathien, the force behind the band’s lightning rod of musical influences, fronts a band boasting three multi-instrumentalists, a classical violinist, and a drummer who would not be out of place in a thrash band. This diversity allows Mathien to cross musical boundaries that recall early 70’s soul, funk and R&B while staying contemporary and avoiding any derivative comparisons.
