Matt Ottewill

Biography

Matt has been making music for many years. What started as a hobby in his teens became a full time professional career in the 1980s when he worked at Island Records, writing and producing for artists such as Incognito, Adrienne Loehry, and Mica Paris.

During the 1990s he opened his own studio, Planet Of Tunes, and began independent record production, making records with The Fellow Travelers, Jebb Loy Nichols, Elio Pace, Brian Douglas, among many others.

In 1999 Matt released his first solo LP "Yield", followed by "Given Name" (2000), "I'm The Wrong Way Up" (2004), "3 Easy Pieces" (2005) and "Gatefold Covers Of The 1970s" (2006).

"When I first fell in love with music in my early teens, I was in awe of artists and the whole mysterious processes of record production. I couldn't begin to understand how "Innervisions" or "The Royal Scam" were made. It's amazing to me that I have managed to spend the last 3 decades being paid whilst I found out!"

Over the last decade Matt has divided his time between writing and recording, and mentoring and helping young music makers to realise their ambitions. His web site www.planetoftunes.com is a free resource dedicated to giving them the kind of advise that was so hard to come by when he was starting out.

"I remember when I got my first tape recorder, searching the bookshops for books on studio recording. The only one I could find was called "You & Your Tape Recorder". In one chapter the author suggested that if you left the microphone on a window ledge during the night, in the morning you would have a delightful recording of bird song! Unsurprisingly there was no advice on how Stevie Wonder achieved his bass synth sounds!"
