Another Punch From A So-Called Friend
2008
Musically, MRK continues their self-imposed exile from Seattle’s beard-driven roots rock scene by stepping even further away from its more Americana-flavored predecessors. The first two songs on “Another Punch (From A So-Called Friend)” deftly explore soul-searching, piano-driven indie pop (“Moment of Truth”), and driving Springsteen-tinged rock (“View from the Bottom”). The next two cuts use four-on-the floor dance beats as the backdrop for songs that cover both the importance of celebrating every moment (“Set It Off”), and acknowledging heartbreaking loss (Find Me Gone). The textural balladry of “Another Punch’s” title cut provides an intimate portrait of painful but inevitable decay of a relationship, and a futile attempt to “put the apple back on the tree”.
