Kendrick “M.E.R.K1” Nichelson was born a Gemini in 1972 to parents Curtis and Stephanie Nichelson. His father, being a talented singer performing gospel songs in various churches around the Sacramento area would influence him, but also encouraged the creative lyricist to find his own path in music. Unknown to a young M.E.R.K. at the time, this journey would lead him to Hip Hop!

Sacramento, California native M.E.R.K. 1 is no stranger to the rap game. In 1986, he would pen his first rhyme, in response to a challenge from another well-known emcee in the area. From that battle forward M.E.R.K. 1 would sharpen his skills and before long his quit wits, word play, and story-telling style would catapult him to the level of well-respected emcee on the streets of Sacramento.

In 1993, he would gain further recognition for his skills as a member of the group Trinity! On the back of a self-produced mix-tape presented by PAUSE Records, the trio would share the stage with some of Sacramento’s best talent, including The Socialistiks and The CUF. Trinity also opened shows for JT the Bigga Figga and KRS-One. The group even made their way to mainstream radio(KSFM 102.5) where they shocked then host, Ebro with their freestyling abilities.

As the group tried their best to navigate their way through the competitive music business, M.E.R.K. 1's first son was born. He decided to take a break from the industry to concentrate on being a father. But not being able to totally separate from his writing, M.E.R.K. began to grab the mic in 2008 and has vowed to never put it down again.

Not only did he begin to write again, he began to make beats. Over the past few years M.E.R.K. 1 has honed his skills in the booth, on the keys, and on the stage. He continues todevelop with every song recorded and possesses the drive and the determination of a 16-year old who's just been told by KRS-One he's hot.

M.E.R.K.1‘s likes to think of himself as a powerful street poet who loves hip-hop. His musicis a sweet mixture of west coast realism and east coast lyricisism. He prides himself on being a constant learner and a workhorse, so be on the lookout for more work from M.E.R.K. 1. He's dope.
