Michael McCarthy biography
Michael has made an incredible impact around the world with his critically acclaimed portrayal of Inspector Javert in Les Misérables. He has performed the role in London’s West End, Broadway, San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne, Shanghai, Dublin, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham, as well as Windsor Castle, the Royal Albert Hall, Chelmsford Outdoor Festival and in stadium arenas throughout Scandinavia.
Previous roles include the title role in Sweeney Todd at the Gothenburg Opera House; Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, USA; The Phantom in Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera, UK; Molokov in Chess at the Oslo Spectrum; Thomas Inkle in Inkle & Yarico on Edinburgh’s mainstage, aired live to Covent Garden, with subsequent live performances given in Washington DC and Berlin followed by a TV documentary filmed in Barbados for PBS(USA). Michael played the Gypsy King in the NBC/SKY film The Tenth Kingdom and a priest in Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s second film Jesus Christ Superstar.
Michael’s many concerts include performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, Stockholm Sinfonietta, Gothenburg Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, Jersey Syphony Orchestra and the Key West Pops Orchestra.
He has been a featured soloist with top artists such as Michael Ball, Bryn Terfel, Lesley Garrett, Timothy Shew and Audra McDonald. As a special interviewed guest, Michael has performed on BBC TV/Radio, RTE TV/Radio, LBC Radio and Australia’s TV Channel 7 and Network Ten TV including numerous concerts for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night.
Michael has recently finished recording his third CD entitled, You’re Still You, to add to his two previous solo CDs, Broadway and Living for the Moment are currently available online. Michael can be seen in a music video on Omusic and YouTube playing the title role of Dracula from Sang de Vie’s latest CD recording. He recorded a song for Charles Miller and Kevin Hammonds' collaboration CD, It's Just The Beginning. On DVD, Michael performed in concert with Lesley Garrett & Friends: Music From The Movies.
Michael was born in Cork, Ireland. He began his career at the age of 15 performing leading roles at the Cork Opera House. He went on to study at the London Academy of Music of Dramatic Art and graduated with high honours. Having received a full scholarship, he continued his studies of theatre and music at Stephens College in the United States and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts academic degree. He currently holds the position of Executive Producer for the Harlequin Performing Arts Academy at Buccament Bay Resort in the Caribbean and is the founder and co-producer of Ireland’s leading Summer School of Performing Arts at the Cork School of Music in Ireland.
