Michael Plater is a solo singer/songwriter based in Melbourne, Australia.
Taking in various indie, rock, lounge, folk, and “noir” influences, his music has been compared to such artists as Leonard Cohen, The Velvet Underground, The Triffids, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, The Go-Betweens Johnny Cash, Tindersticks, and Joy Division.
His 2006 debut album “Rented Rooms” received airplay and media attention in such areas as Spain, The U.K, Italy, France, and the U.S.
His follow-up album “Our Past Lives,” a more varied collection of gothic folk, Velvets-inspired rock, chamber pop, spaghetti western, and country waltzes, was released in Feb 2009.
His latest album, “Exit Keys,” will be released in Febuary 2012. Featuring contributions from Brooke Penrose (Little John, Saint Jude) on bass, organ, accordion, and piano, Bill Deeble (Little John, Saint Jude) on drums and percussion, and Caz Ganell (Laura, Clinkerfield) on cello, the album was recorded throughout 2011 at Captain B Studio.
