Mighty Squirrel

Biography

Mighty Squirrel is a Washington State-based acoustic quartet that plays everything from Appalachian old time and classic country to Yiddish swing, Celtic, and French Canadian songs. Mighty Squirrel presents a friendly, engaging, and high-energy show that appeals to fans of all kinds of musical traditions.

In the band are Caridwen Irvine Spatz (vocals, fiddle), Greg Spatz (octave mandolin, fiddle), David Keenan (National guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, vocals), and Ivan Rosenberg (Dobro, clawhammer banjo, vocals).

Greg, David and Ivan are familiar fixtures on the folk/bluegrass scene. Greg has played with Dobro Rob Ickes among others, and currently plays fiddle for the bluegrass band John Reischman and the Jaybirds. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed novel Fiddler's Dream. David is known for his recent work with Jo Miller & Her Burly Roughnecks as well as Miles & Karina, and he has appeared on Prairie Home Companion with the band Ranch Romance. Ivan has toured with Chris Jones, The Breakmen, Chris Stuart & Backcountry, and New Voices in Slide Guitar (with Steve Dawson, Doug Cox, and Rachelle Van Zanten), and his original music has been licensed for Deadwood, Oprah, and The Daily Show.

But Caridwen's pure, haunting voice is the showpiece of Mighty Squirrel. She has been likened to early Alison Krauss and Jacqui McShee, and she sings in English, French, and Yiddish. Caridwen is also a versatile fiddler in Celtic, old time, klezmer, and many other styles.
