Miriam Barab

Bio: Miriam Barab

A native New Yorker, Miriam was surrounded by music from the start. Her father, Seymour Barab, is a celebrated cellist and composer of contemporary opera, musical theatre, and instrumental works, and was an early influence on her love for the performing arts.

As Miriam continued to broaden her musical horizons, she developed a passion for Brazilian and Latin music. Before long, she was accepting invitations to share the stage with singer/violinist Olga Breeskin on Spanish International Television Networks, and the Latin brother-sister vocal duo Pimpanella at Radio City Music Hall. This exposure led to additional performing opportunities in a Latin jazz musical gala at the Fountainbleu Hilton Hotel, and in an opening act for the Miss Columbia beauty pageant held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

It was there that she caught the eye of Latin-American singing sensation El Puma (José Luís Rodriguez), and she soon found herself joining the band as a back-up singer on his world tour. She also toured the United States on the Marriott Hotel circuit as a singer/dancer in the top-40 and original music band Passion.

Miriam has performed with her trio at notable NYC area jazz venues such as the Garage, Greenwich Café, and Madame X Lounge in Greenwich Village, Cleopatra's Needle, Decade, La Vuelta, Le Singe Vert, Madison Bistro, Penang, Chez Suzette in the Theater District, Amsterdam Café, Londel's Supper Club of Harlem, Showman's Jazz Club of Harlem, Amy Ruth's of Harlem (where it happened that Patti La Belle sang the opening song of Miriam's set), Wilson's Grill & Bar, and Symphony Performing Arts Center, as a member of the renowned Barry Harris Jazz Choir. She also performed for the Fort Lee Film Commission outdoor concert and the Chart House with the Bobby Curtis Show. Miriam also performs at Private Parties and events.

Besides singing standards, Miriam has been including in her repertoire original songs by her father. She also has branched out into songwriting herself.
