Seeker is Mollie Ziegler’s spiritual journey expressed through song. Because some of the songs were written before, and some after her conversion to Christianity, Seeker is a rare view into the heart and mind of one woman searching for truth.
“Six years ago, I was in the recording studio working on my first CD of original music. I’d been trying to write my own songs for years, and this was the first time I really felt I had anything worthwhile to say.”
Ziegler’s pre-conversion songs share the theme of a fervent search for meaning and the questioning of popular spirituality. The music is a well-crafted blend of environmental soundscape with sophisticated pop arranging. Her polished vocals deliver atypical melodies, and she isn’t afraid to sacrifice vocal beauty in order to deliver her message more effectively.
“As a listener, I have always valued vocalists who sound different from the pack. Tom Petty, Chrissie Hynde, and Joanna Newsom come to mind. Years ago, my sister
Emily helped me to appreciate vocal chameleons—singers who change their voices to suit the mood of a particular song. Annie Lennox is particularly good at this.”
Ziegler’s sister, Emily West, plays drums on the CD along with West’s husband Carter Soles on bass. The duo has been making music in Northwest bands for over a decade, and lends a rock edge to Ziegler’s electronic sound.
“All the searching I was doing ultimately led me to Jesus Christ. I didn’t think the music I’d been writing had any place in this new world, so I abandoned the project.”
Over the next six years, Ziegler explored contemporary Christian music, writing and arranging music within established genres for her local church and for the bluegrass gospel trio, “One Road Home”. Then in 2008, a series of events gave Ziegler a fresh vision for her songwriting future.
“I was at a conference where Pastor Jesse Davis said, ‘If Christians have the Creator of the Universe living inside of us, then we should be the most creative people on Earth.’ That statement spoke directly to my soul, and effectively released me to pursue my own voice as a Christian songwriter.”
Four new songs came quickly, along with the concept of combining pre- and post-conversion songs to create a unique CD which tells the story of her spiritual journey. The new songs encourage others to seek truth no matter what their currently-held beliefs.
“I was a seeker before my conversion, and as a Christian, I am still a seeker of truth. In my journey as a Christian, I have found that it is a strong temptation to add to the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is so important that we read the Bible for ourselves.”
Mollie Ziegler’s CD Seeker is inspiring to people of all faiths, is a captivating auto-biographical story, and is a sophisticated and enjoyable musical experience. Released June 2009.
