In winter 2008, Mr Boyd released his debut album Godwomanblue: She Made God Sexy.
On his first album, the singer/songwriter and producer Mr Boyd reexamines faith and love through his relationships with women. Rooted in the kitchen table bible studies he had with his grandmother as a child; this album reflects a resulting life perspective. “If you expect to find something divine in the people around you, you will,” Mr Boyd says. He adds, “Some things you do for money. And some things you do because you’re supposed to. This was the only way I knew how to boldly and unapologetically begin honoring the women that have shaped my life.”
Mr Boyd wrote and produced the entire album, playing all guitars and many other musical instruments himself. He also enlisted the help of several established and up-and-coming musicians and vocalists from the New York music scene. Listen closely and you’ll hear the musical influences of Prince, Sting, Portishead, Coldplay, The Beatles, Lauryn Hill, Marvin Gaye, Sade, Bob Marley, Quincy Jones, Kanye West, Kirk Franklin and Outkast come through in his own unique sound.
“I really wanted the production of the album to look into the future while carrying the varying textures and moods that have influenced me and so many others over the past 20 years,” he says, “I also wanted it to feel like life today. Part computerized, and part organic; part dramatic and part comical; with spiritual and political underpinnings at every turn.”
“Mr Boyd weaves a colorful musical tapestry that includes many styles”
