Mr. VSax is not a jazz artist. Let’s get that out of the way before we begin…
He is a New-Age Sax Artist that plays mostly Hip-Hop, R&B and Afro-Beat genres to inspire a new generation of music.
Since there wasn’t necessarily an avenue for the Urban Saxophonist, Mr. VSax decided to be one of the first sax players to play Hip-Hop covers on youtube (playing Chris Browns #1 hit, Kiss Kiss) in 2007, which helped open an entirely new avenue of sax players to do similar covers all over youtube today.
Mr. VSax’s style has certainly derived from his upbringing, which mostly consists of New Jack Swing, Hip-Hop, 80s & 90s R&B, Gospel, Nigerian, Soul & Jazz genres. Thats why his main influences include Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Teddy Riley, Quincy Jones, Fred Hammond, Najee, Ebenezer Obey, Brandy, Darkchild, Dwele & Mike Phillips, just to name a few.
Lately, Mr. VSax has also diversified his range of musical tastes, as he now enjoys albums/songs such as Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Nevermind from Nirvana, and the legendary riff on Metalica’s “Enter Sandman“.
Mr. VSax was born Victor Oyedeji in Houston, TX. Raised as a 1st-generation Nigerian-American (i.e. Nigerian’s born in the US between 1970-1990), Mr. VSax grew up listening to all the music any American artist will listen to, along with the Native Nigerian music that his parents listened to while growing up. This as a result has diversified his music catalog and has allowed him to perform at various venues, and at Nigerian/African weddings & events.
A man with many hats, Mr. VSax has been nominated for many local awards, and has won 1st place at the 2011 Lakewood’s Got Talent competition at Lakewood Church, Houston, TX. As a musical director, his former band VSax & The Crew has toured with Nigerian Superstar Flavour NAbania in the US, serving as his backup band. They have also opened up for Tuface, J Martins, US Artist V.I.C. and Mr Casper (Cha Cha Slide) and has played for Houston’s Majic 102 and also for United Airlines’ private parties.
He is also known to provide sheet music for most of the Billboard covers that he plays on his VSaxSheets site at http://vsaxsheets.com
