Newpoli

Founded in 2003 by Carmen Marsico, Angela Rossi and Björn Wennås, Newpoli is a group of exceptionally talented musicians who perform Southern Italian Folk Music from the regions of Campania, Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria, integrating a wide variety of styles such as Tarantella-Pizzica, Tammuriata, Villanella and the Neapolitan Canzone, encompassing music from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
Guided by their passion for performing and researching these seldom played traditional styles, the members of Newpoli introduce to the audience, often for the first time, the joy and beauty of Italian folk music while recounting the ancient stories and rituals described in the lyrics.
The group has been enthusiastically received in theaters and concert halls throughout the United States and Europe, with audiences mesmerized by the vitality, energy and spice of their music. In particular, the two singers, Carmen and Angela, are captivating not only for their stage presence and natural talent, but above all, for their exuberance, intensity and passion!
The group’s debut CD “Newpoli” has been heard across the U.S. through radio play and TV broadcasting. The eight-piece ensemble has been nominated four times by the Boston Phoenix Music Poll in the category "Best World Music Act" in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
