Biography

Nhojj began 2009 by returning to his Caribbean roots, honing his unique brand of Caribbean soul, and performing “Love” at the 4th Annual Barbados Music Awards.“

“(Nhojj) made an impact on his audience with his voice, his lyrics and his personality.” - The Barbados Advocate.

“Remember the name because he’s going places.” Cassandra Samuel, TV host of Good Morning Barbados.

“Nhojj is on the cusp of becoming a household name.” Walter Greene, editor of the New York Carib News.

“I am very grateful,” says this Guyanese singer/songwriter. “Some songs take on a life of their own, and Love appears to be one of those songs. It really connects with people.” Not only did Nhojj perform “Love” for the Barbados Music Awards 09, but also for Guyana Fashion Weekend 08. It was also featured at the Cannes Film Festival in the film “Blueprint.”

Nhojj started his musical journey at 5, singing hymns in his fathers church in Guyana, which led to singing on local radio shows, in concert halls, and the ultimate honor of singing in the National stadium before the President. After graduating from NYU with a BA in Economics (honors), he resumed the journey, producing his debut “Ive Been Waiting for You“. It was featured at the 2001 International Fringe Festival in the Award-winning play “The Making of the Black Man.”

“Alludes to Marleys former call for One love” - the Gauntlet Newspaper wrote of his sophomore “Someday Peace Love & Freedom“. Mote Magazine added “Reminiscent of R&B greats Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.” Next Emmy-Nominated director Bill Cote filmed the live DVD “An Intimate Evening with Nhojj” and Nhojj returned to the studio to record his inspirational dedication to his mother, “John Martinborough - Coming home” with producer Sam Archer (Barbershop Soundtrack). He toured London, Toronto, the Caribbean, the USA , and performed at Lincoln Centers Avery Fischer Hall.

The following years earned Nhojj #1 position on the Fusion, Neo-Soul, Nu-Jazz, Healing, Easy listening and Gospel Myspace NY Indie Charts, and honorable mention at the 13th and 14th Annual Billboard Songwriting Contest.

Nhojj’s 4th CD “Soul Comfort” features “Love.” He explains his motivation in writing the songs. “I wanted it to be a celebration of Spirit and all that is good in this life - music, love, family, nature, relationships, sensuality, and spirituality, and freedom.” The organic vibe was produced by Nhojj and Jon Evans and contains samples of Carl Evans on Keyboards (Stevie Wonder, Barry White); David Stark on Guitar (Rick James, Teena Marie); Tommy Aros on Percussion (Luis Miguel).

“With each project I feel like I grow and learn more about humanity and how music helps to uplift and inspire. More and more I realize how I can play my part to help bring people together and spread love around. This is what I love most about music - its ability to heal and nourish our collective Spirit.”
