Trombonist Nick La Riviere makes his living playing freelance all over Victoria, as well as internationally with touring groups such as The Paperboys. Locally Nick plays with many groups including the The Southern Urge, Yiddish Columbia State Orchestra, The Timebenders, The Honeycrooners, Pretzel Logic, Touch of Class, Ken Lavigne, Leon Nagasaki, and more... Nick frequently travels to the USA to play with The Paperboys, and also has toured Germany with that group. People from the Nanaimo/Gabriola Island area may recognize Nick from Dinah D's Contraband Swingclub.
Nick also has two groups of his own. Trombone Mayhem is a co-project with Jeff Agopsowicz, an excellent trombone player formerly in the Naden band who has recently been transferred to Winnipeg but still returns for the occasional show. Mayhem performs two unique shows - one features high energy jazz originals and standards, and the other features dance hits of the 70's with covers of music by artists like Kool & the Gang, Wild Cherry, The Whispers, and KC & The Sunshine Band.
The Nick La Riviere Septet features a string section (two violins and a cello) as well as an excellent rhythm section. This group has released an album in 2009 that received great reviews.
