Oka Vanga are a high octane guitar duo that combine the influences of instrumental Folk music, percussive Brazilain rhythms, acoustic freestyle, and African guitar music to create music that is both rhythmically powerful and melodically rich. These are their songs.... riffs and the grooves and melodic threads borne from foot-stoppin across many continents, gigging in various bands, jammin with friends, jammin on trains, on hot beaches, on cold nights, making music, singing, dancing. It's not acoustic hip-jiggery... just two guitar players making good music, recorded and mixed on analogue tape the old fashioned way and played on stages big and small.
Will? He plays a mean rhythm guitar with high voltage tremelo and devotes his spare time to enjoying classic metal. Angie? She's all about finger-picking rasqueado strumming golpe popping guitar squeals... and she plays a little Barrios on the classical guitar to. Originally from Cape Town, Angie mastered acoustic freestyle, classical guitar and flamenco playing whilst making her mark on the South African music scene before taking time out with her guitar to travel the world. In 2008 Will and Angie formed Oka Vanga, named after the wild Okavango river delta in Botswana.
Will is an all round guitarist, talented multi-instrumentalist, and occasionally playes drums on some of Oka Vangas tracks when the urge takes him! He counts as his influences Ry Cooder, Toumani Diabate', Al De Meola, Ali Farka Toure', Tony Iommi, Martin Carthy, Dave Mustaine, Daron Malakian, Neil Young, Tool, Sepultura, Charley Patton, Bukka White, Slash (oh yes), Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie Mctell (and pretty much everyone from that era with the word "Blind" in their name and quite a few that didn't) .
