Parissa Bouas

Multi award winning, Australian singer-songwriter, PARISSA BOUAS, brings more to a performance than a remarkable voice, a worn out guitar and catchy, classic tunes. A free-spirited artist who is both self-possessed and disarmingly unaffected, playful and profound, PARISSA draws from a deep well of folk, jazz and world music, and continues to bend and blend forms to suit her unmistakable, genre busting style and mesmerizing melodies. “Parissa has a voice that would aggravate angels with it’s beauty” Philip Adams ABC RN.

After fronting folk festival favourites, The Hottentots, from the 90’s, Parissa is now developing her solo career with her recent single release ‘Sad Eyes’ and a new CD due out in 2013. Since beginning her collaboration with Dutch multi instrumentalist, producer Michiel Hollanders in 2011, Parissa’s music has further developed in surprising and intriguing directions. The new timbres of velofoon, saw, fietsband bass and bandoneon mesh perfectly with Parissa’s eclectic vocal stylings and talent for sublime melodies. On earlier recordings her voice has been compared to that of June Tabor, but in her latest solo work it lends more to the jazz stylings of Billie Holiday.

PARISSA is a founding member of world –folk act, Carl & Parissa, aka The Hottentots, with whom she has recorded 6 CD’s; the last 2, ‘Out of Australia’ and the follow up ,‘Halos ‘round the Moon’, out on reknowned German audiophile label, Stockfisch Records. Parissa’s songs, have won NCEIA awards for Best Folk/World, Best Acoustic and won Best Album, twice.

Parissa’s songs have been repeatedly featured on national radio and television to high acclaim. During the last few years Parissa has performed at many major venues and festivals in Europe, Brazil and Australia including: Petruskirche (Berlin), Musicstar (Hamburg), Cultureel Centrum (Mechelen), TV Minas (Brazil), Fairbridge Festival (WA), Camelot Lounge (Sydney), Woodford Folk Festival (Qld) Brunswick Music Festival (Vic), National Folk Festival (ACT)…

Parissa is also known for her inspiring work with choirs at festivals and music camps across Australia. In 2012, Parissa was commissioned to conduct the Fairbridge Festival 20th Anniversary Finale Event Choir and worked with WA stand up poet, Kate Wilson to co write the Fairbridge Festival Song. In 2009 she led the National Folk Festival Choir. In 2000 Carl & Parissa, co -wrote the anthemic ‘Put Your Hand in Mine’ for the Woodford Festival Millenium Fire Event Choir of 700 voices, which she also conducted. It was transmitted by satellite to over 60 countries as part of the ABC TV Millenium program.

Parissa’s voice features on afro beats artist, Yeshe’s 2 award winning CD’s. In 2010 she co wrote the bilingual tune , ‘I Belong’, with Sydney film composer Nicolette Boaz, for the popular ‘Hypnopeadia’ WorldBeats CD, which was featured on Triple J. Parissa’s haunting voice can also be heard on Peter Westheimer’s new ‘Tranzworld Express’ CD.

In her teenage years in Sydney, Parissa sang with top latin bands Ainda, Espiritu and Salsabrosa , culminating in performances opening for Dizzy Gillespie at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and the Darling Harbour Bicentennial Closing Ceremony.
