Composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Bufano has written original scores for The Big Apple Circus ("Grand Tour"), The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus ("Cardboard and Duct Tape Spectacular", "My Last Circus", and "From The Gutter To The Glitter"), Circus Smirkus ("Alice", "Pinocchio", "Zoot Suit Caper", and additional clown music for "First Flight") , and Spiegelworld ("Nocturne" NYC, Edinburgh, and Los Angeles Productions). His 2011 score for the PBS documentary Circus Dreams won an ASCAP Plus award.
In 2015 Bufano performed his original music on stage with international circus and variety artists in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Edinburgh. He appeared in The Chicago International Circus Festival and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
In 2016 he composed original music for The American Circus Awards at Lincoln Center, Circus Smirkus, and the feature documentary “Circus Kid”.
He is the founder of Cirkestra, a circus pit-band for which he is composing and producing a seventh release. Cirkestra has toured the United States performing hundreds of shows in and out of the big top including performances at The Kennedy Center, The Seattle Art Museum, and The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
Bufano’s career began in 1986 as a clown in Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in which he performed thousands of times across the United States. Since then, as a musician he’s played with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Kinoshita Circus of Japan, Big Apple Circus, Circus Smirkus, and Vegas Nocturne.
Bufano teaches Film Scoring at The Berklee College of Music in Boston. He's a graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College, Berklee College of Music, and The ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop at NYU.
