Phil Smedley II

Phillip Smedley II is a multi-talented musician and producer, from the great city of Columbus, Ohio. He is the son of Phillip Smedley Sr. who was a well known church musician in the area and saw that his son Phillip II was into drums at the age of 2. Phillip II continued to work hard and practice to the point that when he was 6 years old he was asked to perform for musicals and shows at Capital University where he received his first series of paid gigs, thanks to his Uncle Joe Dunlap.

Phillip continued to grow musically playing for bands, trio's and choirs around the city and abroad. His time playing with musicians and mentors such has Joe Dunlap Sr, Wesley Dunlap, Dwight Bailey, Kim (Lynx) Tyus, Nick Green and other great musicians helped tremendously, but his time as being just a drummer changed almost overnight. The unexpected death of his Uncle Joe Dunlap Sr, caused a void in the position of church organist and at the age of 19, Phillip was told that he would need to try to fill in the best he could having no formal training on keyboards. Phillip II was pushed almost beyond what he thought he could take, but accepted the challenge and showed a very strong interest in keyboards and the Hammond organ. Phillip Sr. always speaks about how many nights his son was up to 3am-4am in the morning practicing and playing in order to get better and work to achieve his goals on keyboards. Phillip never gave up on playing drums, but gained experience on organ, keyboards playing with dynamic groups and choirs such as C.Y.C, Sean Scales and Emma Easton with the M.A.C Choir just to name a few.

4 years later, Phillip was a well respected musician on drums, keyboards and the Minister of Music at his church. Phillip II began to get calls to play at various churches in State and out of State to move and serve at other locations, but he remains faithful to his home church Eliezer Church of Christ in which he has played over 30 years. Since that time, Phillip has shared the stage, performed and recorded with excellent musicians in Columbus and around the World. Some of Phillip II's most recent work is with Drummer/Musician extraordinaire Kevin Hayden from Milwaukee, Wisc. Phillip is grateful that he got a chance to collaborate on the opening track "Skyline" for Kevin's Assignments & Delegations project and the later release single "Awaken". In 2011 Phillip released a play-along album for drummers called "Drummers Paradise Vol.1" which enables drummers to increase their abilities on drums with practicing with music suitable for today's Gospel & R&B scene. With mobile studio capabilities, Phillip now records various instrumental tracks for artist around the country. Phillip has also done some recording on drums for musician/singer Todd Holbein and Phillip recently finished work on his debut instrumental album in which he plays Keyboards, Drums and Bass guitar and even sings on various tracks. Phillip is starting a band to take his music around the world! Phillip credits his wife Latasha Smedley who he married in 2003 and his three lovely children Lani, Niah and Phillip III for inspiring him to keep being the best he can be at all times. Phillip gives God all of the credit for everything especially his desire in music and the love for his family.
