Poj

Like all of Soul Owner Music’s artists, POJ is an artist that relishes in thinking outside of the box. He is a creative and conscience rapper with the work ethic and soul of a working class Black man with a degree. He crafts words from his struggles and successes that only experience and time could mold. Following the company's “No hype no embellishment” motto, his words can educate and challenge the audience through cleaver wordplay and dope beats while avoiding dumbing down and preachiness. Every word and every beat exposes deeper layers of his personality, philosophies, and emotion. His music reflects a positive and enlightening element of the Black community, which are down to earth, real life human beings living life like other human beings. Clearly, he found a home he can be comfortable in his own skin, mature and excel to amazing heights.

Born and raised in Sacramento as Derrick Burks, POJ (Product of Jewel) has found a habitual success in music and sports. Under a former alias ‘Proph’ he was the 2007 Independent Music award winner for Hip Hop song of the year with the song “Back of the Bus”. He earned his degree from the University of Iowa, where he is the school’s third all-time leader in the sixty meter sprint. Other sports achievements included: Jr Olympic 4x1 champion, third place in the California community college state meet, third in the California community college state meet, nationally ranked 30th in the 100 meter dash, US trial qualifier, US Jr Nationals qualifier, and an indoor 60 meter Big Ten finalist 3 years in a row.
He proved his emotional strength by overcoming the loss of his mother, Ruby Jewell Burks, to cancer in 2007. Her death devastated him, giving him an emotional setback that prevented him from capitalizing on the success of his first album, "Now Playin'". Now, with his zest for music renewed and a stronger vigor, he has chosen his new alias, POJ, to reflect his love for his mother and to show her spirit within him. Fueled by her spirit and the influences of DJ Quik and Nas, POJ has returned with a new album; Red Eye Express.
