Powderhouse is a female-fronted rock band from Boston. With a sound that combines alt-country, garage rock, power-pop and classic rock, Powderhouse creates original music that features strong songwriting, emotional vocals, loud guitars, powerful drums, tasty keyboards and hi-energy performances.
Powderhouse is built upon the songwriting and vocals of Teresa Mastrorilli. Teresa had been writing songs for several years when she approached the rhythm section of Ray Boyce (x-Returnables) and Kevin Moylan at the end of 2006 to help her record some of her material. At that time, Kevin and Ray were in a band called The New Thirty. The New Thirty had been playing around Boston for the past several years, releasing the CD "Racecar" on FOC Records as well as being selected to play the 2006 International Pop Overthrow Festival at The Paradise Lounge in Boston.
Kevin and Ray thought Teresa's songs were great, so they asked their guitarist friend Evan Appelbaum (who played with Kevin and Ray in a party band called Big Vise) to join them in the recording sessions. Things went so well that they decided to form a band. "Powderhouse" played their debut gig to a packed house at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville in May of 2007. Since then, the band has played very successful gigs at Church in Boston, T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge, Oliver's Nightclub in Boston, Copperfield's in Boston, All Asia Bar in Cambridge, Bill’s Bar in Boston and Porters Bar in Boston. The band released a 9 song EP (taken from those initial recording sessions) on FOC Records in 2007.
Looking to expand their sound, Powderhouse invited keyboardist Art Daprato to join the band in early 2008. Not long after, Fred Pickard (x-New Thirty, x-Returnables) came on board as lead guitarist. After successful gigs with the new line-up at All Asia Bar, Porters Bar, Church and T.T. the Bear's Place, Powderhouse was selected by music critic David Bash to play the Boston edition of the International Pop Overthrow Festival in November of 2009. The band spent the winter of 09/10 recording new material, surfacing for successful gigs at Copperfields and Oliver's Nightclub.
Powderhouse released their first full-length album, "In The Meantime", on FOC Records in July of 2010 (available on CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon MP3, eMusic and elsewhere), which the band celebrated with a very successful CD Release Party at Oliver's Nightclub in Boston. Since then, the song "Keeping My Heart" (from the new album) was voted onto the Top 5 Local Song Poll on WZLX/Boston Emissions for 4 straight weeks, and songs from the album have received airplay on both traditional and Internet radio. After a big Saturday night gig at Church in Boston in October 2010, Powderhouse was once again selected to play the International Pop Overthrow Festival, held at PA's Lounge in November of 2010, and followed that up with another successful show at Precinct in Somerville in December. More recently, Powderhouse was featured as the "Soundtrack" artist of the day on "The Morning Show" on NECN Television in February of 2011. Several Powderhouse songs have also been placed in the independent film "Wingman", to be released later in 2011. Powderhouse continues to play shows around the Northeast, to support their debut album and to gain more exposure, while also working on a new EP which will be released in November 2012.
