BIOGRAPHY
Pragnya Wakhlu is an award winning singer ,songwriter and guitarist from India. Her songs are about inner reflection ,thoughts , feelings and issues she feels strongly about. Though music was always an integral part of Pragnya's life, her career began as an IT professional.While working in Seattle she started writing her own songs and made her debut performace at the Mainstage Music & comedy club,Seattle. After a few successful shows abroad , she quit her job to become a full time performing musician.She also started her own company which integrates music & movement with learning.
Known for her powerful vocals ,soulful singing style and deep lyrics, Pragnya was the only Indian nominee for the ‘Bite my Music’ Global Music awards in the Best Female Vocalist Category from countries across the globe. She bagged the 3rd place at the ‘Indiego Music Awards (South East Asia 2011) for the Best Female Vocalist & is a two time nominee for the Jack Daniel’s Rock Awards(2010,2011).
She has been featured in leading Indian magazines (Femina, New Woman,Just Femme & Perfect Woman) as an Indian woman that breaks stereotypes & also in leading Indian newspapers Hindustan Times, The Times of India,The Indian Express,The Tribune,The Daily post & Dainik Bhaskar.
With over 180 shows to her credit, when Pragnya is not performing solo ,she plays with her band “Soul Strings” where she is the singer and lead guitarist. She is also a part of the African percussion based band “Taal Inc.”
Her solo album “Journey to the Sun” recorded independently with various artists was released in May 2012. Her previous releases include the tracks "Kal Nahin Aata" & "Rise" released with acclaimed Indian singer ,Shuba Mudgal's record label Underscore Records (http://v2.underscorerecords.com/catalog/detail/269/Kal-Nahi-Aata).The songs were also featured on a compilation CD called Awaken-I which aism to build funds for the Awaken-I project.(http://awakeni.org/groups/)
Influences: Her singing style is inspired by artists such as Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman, KT Tunstall, Red Hot Chili Peppers ,Norah Jones and Led Zepplin.
