I Pulp Dogs nascono dall’idea dei chitarristi Vincenzo Pastano e Antonello D’Urso di riproporre i motivi “pulp” più conosciuti tratti dalle colonne sonore dei film di Q. Tarantino.
Ispirati dall’uso che il regista fa della musica nei suoi film, i Pulp Dogs hanno iniziato il loro percorso musicale con la composizione di brani inediti che li ha portati a incidere il loro primo cd dal titolo “Song of Jealousy”.
I brani del CD riflettono la natura dei Pulp Dogs, amanti sia delle contaminazioni del passato, soprattutto la musica americana degli anni ‘50 e ‘60 fino alle atmosfere rock psichedeliche e blues degli anni ‘70, sia del rock-surf più moderno.
Il cd vanta la partecipazione straordinaria del Maestro del Canzoniere Popolare Grottagliese Salvatore Abatematteo e di Mauro Patelli, chitarrista storico di Luca Carboni.
Il mastering finale è stato eseguito da Marc Urselli (vincitore di tre Grammy Awards) all’East Sound Studio di New York. Ascoltando il loro Cd, il famosissimo bluesman Elliott Murphy sceglie i Pulp Dogs come band d’apertura per la sua data del tour in Italia al Kanaka Caffè di Reggio Emilia. Da li in poi è stata una lunga escalation di eventi importanti infatti i Pulp Dogs nel giugno dello stesso anno suoneranno sul palco del Biografilm Festival come ospiti e vi ritorneranno l’anno successivo come band residente prestando “You make me a fool”, contenuta nel primo disco, come sigla della rassegna internazionale. Sull’onda di questo successo nello stesso anno suonano alla serata inaugurale della 64° Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Venezia alla presenza di Q. Tarantino. Nel corso degli anni calcano i palchi più importanti d’Italia: Naima Club di Forlì, Wolf Music Club, Transilvania, Cortile Cafè e La Scuderia di Bologna, il Milwaukee 50's Diner a Milano, Hot Road a Treviso, festa di Capodanno a La Spezia in collaborazione con l’associazione Bluesin, Petra Live Music a Brindisi sono solo alcuni dei posti in cui i Pulp Dogs si sono esibiti nel corso degli ultimi tre anni. Una citazione particolare al Rock Circus Music Hall di Bologna quando la band ha ampliato la sua line-up per l'occasione per diventare i Pulp Dogs Orkestra formata da 10 elementi.
Nel dicembre 2009 registrano il loro secondo album, “Lu Cunnannatu”, una parentesi di musica tradizional popolare, che raccoglie nove tracce cantate in dialetto jonico-salentino e ripropone la collaborazione del Maestro S. Abatematteo. L’album è completamente riarrangiato nello stile che da sempre caratterizza la band.
Il sound della band è fortemente caratterizzato dalle virtuose chitarre rock di Vincenzo Pastano e quelle a tinte blues di Antonello D’Urso, due chitarristi tra i più amati e talentuosi, ormai punto di riferimento nel panorama della musica in Italia, e dalla sezione ritmica di Michele Turchi al basso e Marco Gualandra alla batteria dall’inconfondibile sound anni ‘60. Dal vivo i Pulp Dogs, puntando sulla voce ed il carisma del “front-man” Tony Farina, sono una band coinvolgente, irresistibile: oltre ai brani tratti dal loro Cd, il repertorio spazia dai brani più conosciuti di Tom Waits, brani della tradizione cubana, Renato Carosone, Ray Charles, i Doors, fino ai rock’n’roll più scatenati.

The Pulp Dogs started with a tribute to Quentin Tarantino’s movies soundtrack hits: since then they have followed the path that would inevitably lead them to developed their own style and write songs for their first self-produced cd, called “Song of Jealousy”, which was realized in Italy in 2006, and mastered by Grammy-winner Marc Urselli from the East Sound Studios of New York. “Song of Jealousy” reflects Pulp Dogs’ love for the American music of the 50s and 60s, especially rock’n’roll, up to psychedelic rock and blues of the 70s and the more recent surf-rock. By listening their cd, worldwide popular bluesman Elliott Murphy chooses the Pulp Dogs among other bands to open his exclusive 2006 tour date in Italy at Kanaka Caffè in Reggio Emilia. In the same year the band is hosted by the prestigious Biografilm Festival in Bologna and the next year one of the cd tunes, “You Make me a Fool”, becomes the soundtrack of the Festival. On the waves of this success the band performs during the opening night of the 64° Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Venezia, well known as one the most prestigious cinema festivals in the world, and at the presence of Quentin Tarantino. Thereafter the band continues his live activity all over Italy: Naima Club in Forlì, Wolf Music Club, Cortile Cafè, the Transilvania and La Scuderia in Bologna, the Milwaukee 50's Diner in Milan, Hot Road in Treviso, New Year’s Eve party in La Spezia, Petra Live Music in Brindisi are only some of the venues where the Pulps performed over the last 3 years. A particular mention to the Rock Circus Music Hall in Bologna, when the band expanded their line-up for the occasion, to become the Pulp Dogs Orkestra with 10 elements.
In the heart and minds of the Pulp Dogs there has always been a special interest in rediscovering their south-Italian folk routes, as half of the band member come from the South of Italy. Since they first met Maestro Salvatore Abatematteo, leader of the Canzoniere Popolare Grottagliese (a folk music Chorale), who sang one of the tunes of the first cd, this meeting between traditional songs and rock has became a project: recording a new cd, which has has just been released last December 2009, entitled “Lu Cunnannato” (The Condamned). It is a fabulous collection of traditionals song in a south of Italy dialect and rearranged in the Pulp Dogs unmistakable style.
The sound of the band is characterized by two remarkable leading guitarists, Vince Pastano and Antonello D’Urso, both the band producers, who are considered among the most talented in Italy, a fine rhythm section with producer Michele Turchi on bass and Marco Gualandra on drums, and last but not least Tony Farina’s great voice and charisma; they all make every performance an unrepeatable experience, by playing a list of songs from their cds, Tom Waits’s hits, songs of the Cuban tradition, of Renato Carosone, Ray Charles, the Doors, and frenetic rock’n’roll hits, all in perfect “Italo-americano” style.
