Biography

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and director Roberto López (artiste révélation Radio-Canada Musique 2010-2011 and JUNO AWARD nominee) transports us with his music through a mix of tradition and modernity, encompassing styles such as Cumbia-Funk, Urban-Mambo, Boogaloo, Latin-Soul into what he defines as Nu-Afro-Latin.

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Roberto moved to Montreal to pursue his studies in Jazz performance and composition at Concordia University. After playing with many diverse artists, he created the Roberto López Project in the Fall 2005, so he could present his original compositions. Based in Montreal, QC, band members include talented musicians originating from various parts of America such as Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, New-Brunswick, and Quebec. The band performs at many festivals throughout Quebec, Ontario, New-Brunswick and Mexico.

Past high profile shows include: Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (2008, 2011), the Francofolies de Montréal (2006, 2007, 2009), Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado (2009, Sonora, Mexico), Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival (2009, Fredericton, N.B.), Festijazz de Rimouski (2007), Junofest (2011, Toronto), Festival des guitares du monde (Rouyn Noranda, 2011), Rythmes du monde du Saguenay (2009, Chicoutimi), Lula Fest - Lula Lounge (2010, Toronto), Festival des traditions du monde (2008, Sherbrooke), Yonge-Dundas Square (2010, Toronto), Week-ends du monde au Parc Jean Drapeau (2008, Montréal), Musique du bout du Monde (2007, Gaspé), a sold out show at the TOHU (2008), Outremont Theatre (show taped for CBC Radio 2, 2007), among many others.

Roberto was featured in the grand opening show of the Francofolies de Montréal in 2007, alongside Daniel Boucher and other artists, in front of more than 100,000 people, which was filmed for ARTV. He has performed on TV shows such as Belle et Bum, Ça manque à ma culture, Baromètre, and his music was featured several times on the hit show presented by Guy A. Lepage on Radio-Canada: Tout le monde en parle.
