Since 1977, David Messick and the people at Rainbow Puppet Productions have created shows that educate, entertain, and inspire.
The Rainbow Puppets combine multiple puppet styles with original music and hand crafted puppets made by master puppeteers from across the country. Added to that are legendary voices. Virginia piano virtuoso Bruce Hornsby, Tony Award winner Geoffrey Holder and Tuskegee Airman Ezra Hill are just some of the people who have helped the company create unique professional theater experiences for young audiences.
Notable productions include “From the Sea to the Sky” which tells 400 years of Virginia history in about 40 minutes, “The Wright Brothers” which was performed at Wolftrap the national park for the arts and annually at the Smithsonian, “Toyland!” featuring vocal performances by movie legend Mickey Rooney and “A Pirate Party” which teams Mickey with Broadway legend Carol Channing.
The company has taught workshops for Puppeteers of America and the Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers. They have created original programs for the Virginia Aquarium, the Holocaust Commission, the Virginia Living Museum, the Blackbeard Pirate Festival and the Virginia Aviation Museum.
