Ria Carlo

Biography

From Ria Carlo's website:
"By day, I am a mathematician, and on evenings and weekends, I give piano concerts. I am doing two of the things I love most, and my journey has led me to believe that music and mathematics are intimately linked as two faces of the same gem, bringing us to a greater understanding and appreciation of the order, the beauty, and even the divinity of the cosmos in which we live."

Ria Carlo was born in Trinidad and Tobago of East Indian descent and works for the US Defense Space Program. She was educated at Harvard, Princeton, and University of Cambridge and worked for the Hubble Space Telescope team and NASA. In high school, Ria took piano lessons at the New England Conservatory attaining high honors and was then piano accompanist for the Princeton University Glee Club. She has also studied early instruments at the Margaret Chaloff Foundation, organ and liturgical music, and she has sung with college and church choirs throughout the United States. Ria has won various piano competitions including the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition, has performed at venues around the world from Rome to Carnegie Hall, and has been profiled as a pianist in a variety of publications including Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine. Ria volunteers in non-profit educational organizations with her husband, Mark. They love travelling, learning, and helping people and are the founders of the Freedom Scholars of America Scholarship Fund.
