Rich Halley 4

Rich Halley is a saxophonist/composer who has released sixteen critically acclaimed recordings as a leader. His work has been praised in Downbeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice, Cadence, All About Jazz and on National Public Radio’s “Fresh Air”. He has been the subject of features in Cadence and Jazz Forum.

Rich performs in settings that range from solo to large groups but most frequently with the Rich Halley 4, his quartet featuring trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, bassist Clyde Reed and drummer Carson Halley. He is also the leader of the Outside Music Ensemble, a 4 horn/2 percussion sextet that performs in acoustic outdoor settings.

Rich’s groups have performed throughout the US and in Canada and the Middle East at venues including the Vancouver Jazz Festival, Earshot Jazz Festival, Bumbershoot, Jazz City, In the Flow, Open Gate Theatre, California Institute of the Arts, Yoshi’s (SF), The Velvet Lounge (Chicago) and the Cornelia Street Cafe (NYC).

Rich was the leader of the Lizard Brothers, an inside/outside sextet that released several widely praised recordings, and Multnomah Rhythm Ensemble, a group that combined new jazz with multi-media. He has performed with Bobby Bradford, Andrew Hill, Tony Malaby, Vinny Golia, Michael Bisio, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake and Obo Addy.

For the past 20 years Rich has been the musical director of the Penofin Jazz Festival which has presented many leading creative jazz artists including William Parker, Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake, Ellery Eskelin, Ken Vandermark, Ray Anderson, Jeff Parker, Gerry Hemingway, Tony Malaby, Craig Taborn, Gerald Cleaver, Nicole Mitchell and Mark Helias.

For the past 14 years Rich has presented annual walk-in concerts in Powell Butte Nature Park as part of the Portland Parks Summer Concert series. These concerts feature his site specific original compositions performed by the Outside Music Ensemble.

Rich is a founder of Portland’s Creative Music Guild. Rich was educated as a field biologist. His lifelong interest in nature has informed his music and led him on many trips into wilderness regions around the world. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
