Jodi Phillis and Tim Oxley are Roger Loves Betty. Meeting in the gritty musical hub of Newtown in Sydney, Australia in the late 1980’s, they worked together at Mambo Graphics, Jodi as a designer and Tim as a screen printer. They exchanged smiles and a general appreciation for music for many years before actually hanging out and creating music together.
Learning to play drums at age 11 and then getting into guitar later on, Tim played in the bands The Humdingers and The Very’s and the laid back country duo, Grandview. Tim is a gifted songwriter, singer and musician. He also produces albums for other artists, among the Laura Imbuglia and Giles Field.
Jodi is the daughter of an American singing Mum and an Australian script writing Dad. Jodi was born in Melbourne, then moved to Los Angeles where she spent her formative years.
Jodi started singing as soon as she could talk and later joined school choirs, deepening her love for harmony singing. She got her first guitar at age 12 and started writing songs at 14.
In 1989, Jodi formed the alternative pop/rock band The Clouds, who went on to enjoy a wonderful 8 years of music making. They travelled the world and received much critical acclaim, gaining many fans along the way.
By now Jodi and Tim had become good friends and during their hectic recording and touring schedules would occasionally get together to make 4 track recordings. They experimented with layered harmonies and wrote songs about love and peace and freedom. Jodi left The Clouds in 1997 with an urge to create more intimate music.
Tim and Jodi formed the gentle, countrified pop group The Dearhunters. They recorded 1 album of extraordinary grace and power that was received with praise around the world.
Tim has released 2 highly acclaimed solo albums, Jodi has released 3. All of which were released through Candle Records.
Jodi and Tim decided to join forces in 2007 as Roger Loves Betty.
Their gorgeous debut album ‘Let Love Begin’ was released in May ‘08.
Bursting with harmonies and lyrics of love and hope, it has a retro warmth taking you back to the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. They have just completed their 2nd album, ‘Circle Suckers and Bubblestars’ and are very excited about their new direction.
