By day States is a circus musician traveling year-round with Big Top. He lives on one of the last remaining circus trains where he maintains a project studio. Strange Town is the first album ever made on a train. It was made in dozens of US train yards and on dozens of train runs.
Strange Town is a nod to singer/songwriters from the ‘70s and ‘80s. The songs are 'out' just enough to point their nose up at old conventions without being deliberately political. The album is a love letter to New York City. The songs tell a story of moving from Middle America to the Big Apple less than a year after Sept 11th.
The down-tempo music is primarily guitar driven, but you'll also hear piano, horn section and solo sax. Influences range from European pop to American southern rock (The Eagles, Ben Folds Five, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, The Beatles). Among the many musical collaborators the record boasts Cameron Morgan (Wynton Marsalis, David Lynch), Deon Estus (Wham!, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner, Elton John), Mark Nemer (Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross), Jim Clark of www.realsax.com (Mickey Dolenz, Dizzy Gillespie.)
States is the youngest of eleven children. He was born in Chicago and attended music school at the University of North Texas. He started out as a piano accompanist, church musician, and mobile deejay.
