Born in 1961, the Finnish guitarist Sam Sievänen started playing guitar at the age of ten. The first steps were taken in the spirit of rock without any guidance but it soon became obvious that instruction was necessary. Sievänen studied first with Hannu Annala, and then with Jukka Savijoki, who also was his teacher during his years at the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki.
During his studies Sievänen also participated in several master classes, with such names as Hubert Käppel, Manuel Barrueco, David Russel, Göran Söllscher, Per-Olof Johnsson, Gordon Crosskey, Alice Artzt, John W. Duarte and Carlo Ambrosio.
In 1983 Sievänen took first place in the national K.V. Leino Guitar Competition and in 1990 he was finalist in the international Scandinavian Guitar Competition in Finland. Sam Sievänen graduated and got his Master of Music degree from Sibelius-Academy in 1987.
Sam Sievänen teaches in Southern Ostrobothnian Music Institute since 1985.
