After a busy year fronting rock band Shallow Day in 2010 and playing the hell out of the YouTube hit song 'Twilight (what have you done to my wife?)' , SEELS felt it was time to slow down and smell the roses. Well, that didn’t last long and shortly after decided to release a solo album of previous songs that didn’t quite fit the Shallow Day criteria. In his own words SEELS says “I’ve had this collection of songs that no matter how often I listen to them, I never get bored.” These songs eventually became his debut album Emotion City.
SEELS grew up in San Diego and moved to St George UT when he was 14. He credits U2 for planting the music virus in him at an early age and has since played in several successful bands. “This album is truly all me and I feel I was able to do whatever I wanted on it. I wasn’t trying to keep songs under four minutes or use traditional writing structures. This is me at my creative best,” SEELS explains. It is easy to see that Emotion City is a side step from the catchy, power-strong choruses of Shallow Day. These songs are deep, sincere, and in a way, more powerful than anything he has done before. All the songs from Emotion City were recorded in his home studio during the late hours of the night where his creativity is most awake.
Award winning film maker Shaun Labrecque teamed up with SEELS to direct a music video for the song ‘When I’m Gone’, where a man dies in the desert and is brought back to life by a scorpion sting to the chest. The video is as beautiful as the song that accompanies it. With his love for film, SEELS hopes to get his music onto movie scores. Emotion City is available for download at iTunes and CDbaby.
