Selina Martin is a rare musical artist. An original. She’s a powerful songwriter
& singer who isn’t afraid to show the tools in her arsenal of influence as she
creates works that fly in the face of convention.
Selina has toured across Canada, the US and Europe and has 2 critically
acclaimed solo CD’s under her belt. Her most recent release is a collaborative
recording with Dave Bidini, Martin Tielli, Ford Pier & Barry Mirochnick
(Neko Case band). Music From Five Hole was released to accompany the
theatre + live band tour in February/March 2009. Martin/Bidini/Tielli also
collaborated to compose the score for the documentary film Act of God
(Mercury Films) which opened the Hot Docs Festival 2009 in Toronto.
Her first CD,Space Woman, received rave reviews, and in 2005 Selina released
her 2nd CD, Life Drawing Without Instruction. It was almost 2 years in the
making, but it was worth it. Amassing talents from her musical peers
(Weakerthans, Rheostatics, St. Dirt Elementary School..) and stretching her
own band to perform a profusion of instruments, she and co-producers
Annelise Noronha (Blue Rodeo, Bruce Cockburn) and Michael Phillip
Wojewoda (Barenaked Ladies, Rheostatics) created an album that wowed
critics,fans and peers.
Life Drawing Without Instruction was one of CBC Radio 3’s top albums of 2005
and is on Gord Downie’s (Tragically Hip) web-list of ‘music you should hear’. Martin has also
been featured on CBC’s Bandwidth, Radio Sonic, and Sunday Morning. She has
shared the stage with Oh Susanna, The Rheostatics, The Skydiggers, Bob
Wiseman, Ani di Franco, Kathleen Edwards, Feist, and many more.
Selina Martin is passionate and candid, bestowed with a hunger for lyrics, a
striking ear for melody,a gigantic stage presence, and an unforgettable voice.
