Shamik

Biography

Shamik is a beatboxer/ vocalist based in Vancouver who has performed in 15 countries and 5 continents.

His vocal percussion is a language communicated with crushing basslines and crisp rhythms, like an acappella DJ set going from genre to genre. In 2008 Shamik toured with Method Man & Redman for 11 dates and with Bassnectar for 14 dates. In addition, he has collaborated on stage for multiple dates with Q-Bert, Kentaro, Z-Trip, Killa Kela, Tanya Tagaq, Skream, Excision, Freq Nasty, Fort Knox Five, Knight Riderz, X-Ecutioners, and Mat The Alien. Shamik has also performed with various bands including Oka, Thievery Corporation, Delhi 2 Dublin, Salmonella Dub, and Beats Antique. He has showcased at festivals such as Rothbury (USA), Shambhala, Vancouver Island Musicfest, Victoria Jazz Festival, Vancouver Jazz Festival, New Forms Festival, Edmonton Folkfest (Canada), Mood Indigo, Sunburn (India), Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic), Southbound, Peats Ridge, Sub Sonic (Australia), and Dubplate (Philippines). He has proven that beatboxing knows no boundaries by performing with 12-time Grammy winning dobro player Jerry Douglas, and opening for 10-time Grammy winner George Benson with Juno winner Kellylee Evans. In the last 5 years, he has opened for Kool Herc, Numark, Girl Talk, Andy C, Kid Koala, Bonobo, N-Type, Spooky, Marky & Stamina MC, Krafty Kuts, Rusko, The Glitch Mob, D-Styles, and The Nextmen.

With 2 solo albums under his belt, Shamik has made guest appearances on releases by Tanya Tagaq (Ipepac), Subvert (Rottun), Sub Swara (Low Motion), Knight Riderz (Made In Glitch), and Kush Arora (High Chai). This year Shamik did 2 dates with Flying Lotus & Gaslamp Killer in Melbourne, presented a live globally streamed TED Talk with Kevin Carroll in New York City, performed with Juno winner Jane Bunnett in Brampton, and opened for Dub FX in Vancouver. 2011 also marked the launch of Shamik's 'Westward Rising' concept, which is a musical collaboration uniting Western Canadian artists. Last year he also performed at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, TedX Vancouver at Electronic Arts, VIMA Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Disney Headquarters in LA, and as the one-man band for Kevin Carroll's 'Katalyst' web series in Portland.
