Shamik is a vocalist and producer based in Vancouver. As a beatboxer and MC, he toured extensively across 15 countries from 2007-2012. His beatboxing style crossed over between hip hop and electronica sounds, and he maintained a positive presence through conscious lyrics. His notable career achievements include touring with Method Man & Redman (with Unkle $am) for 11 dates across Canada in 2008, 14 North America dates with Bassnectar in 2008, 2 BC dates opening for George Benson (with Kellylee Evans) in 2010, 5 vocal performances with Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, and a beatbox tutorial video which has garnered over 100 000 views on Youtube. He has opened for Thievery Corporation, Girl Talk, Wilco, Kool Herc, Salmonella Dub, and Flo Rida and shared the stage with beatbox legends Dub FX, Killa Kela, Felix Zenger, and Reggie Watts. A lot of Shamik's notoriety in Western Canada came from festival appearances where he demonstrated his ability to make bass heavy beatbox sounds with crisp percussion. Among his festival highlights are Shambhala, Bass Coast, Edmonton Folkfest, Vancouver Island Musicfest (Canada), Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic), Southbound, Peats Ridge (Australia), Mood Indigo, Sunburn (India), and Dubplate (Philippines). In Vancouver, Shamik performed at TEDx 2009, New Forms Festival, Vancouver Jazzfest, and the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. He has also done multiple shows with Q-Bert, Z-Trip, Skream, Kentaro, Excision, Beats Antique, Flying Lotus, Dam-Funk, Skratch Bastid, Rusko, Oka, Mat The Alien, Craze, Mark Pritchard, and The Glitch Mob. Shamik and renowned speaker Kevin Carroll were one of 17 finalists for TED 2012 and presented a live globally streamed talk at TED headquarters in New York.
Shamik has several independent solo releases and collaborations on various labels such as East Van Digital, Rottun, Low Motion, Swing Set Sounds, Street Ritual, Atomic Zoo, Made In Glitch, Bombeatz, and High Chai. Tanya Tagaq also featured him on 3 songs on her Juno nominated Auk album which included Mike Patton of Faith No More, Buck 65, and Jesse Zubot. Since 2012, Shamik has shifted his focus into production, photography, and running his new label, Sensing Waves. This year he scored his brother Vivek Shraya's short film, Holy Mother My Mother. Shamik also recently released Channeling India, his debut album as a producer. Stay tuned for a few more releases and tour dates for the second half of 2014.
