Shivaraj began his music career at age 8 when his parents enrolled him in classical piano lessons. After years of recitals, auditions with technical graders, and daily practice, he was ready to learn the saxophone so he joined the school band. He moved up to first seat alto sax and also joined the swing band playing baritone sax. He found rock 'n roll in the 1960s and joined a band. Soon, he purchased his first electronic organ, a Farfisa, and joined another band called The Other Half. Next, he moved up to a Hammond organ with the big Leslie tone cabinet. This band became the top band
in Westchester NY playing at dances, clubs, weddings and private gigs. Our crowning award was playing for the famous TV host, Ed Sullivan.
After high school Shivaraj became more interested in women, career, and then in starting a family. During this period, his music interest waned. But then it awakened again, as did a calling to find inner meaning and peace. So, by 2005, he was playing music again, but also was walking the path of yoga.
He received his 500 hour yoga teacher training at Kripalu in 2009 and today owns a virtual yoga studio called YogaTreeYoga, leading weekly classes, monthly workshops, as well as private lessons and yoga therapy. As an Acharya, he is a lineage-holder of the Kripalu Yoga tradition which teaches Swami Kripalu's "path of love" which is to live consciously with compassion for all.
Shivaraj has recently produced a yoga video, Shiva Nidra based on a lucid dream in the fall of 2012. It is available as a cd or as a download, by visiting his website yogatreeyoga.com.
