Alan Shoesmith Cedar & Spruce

Shoesmith, Chamberlain & Cardey

It is well over a decade since Jeff Cardey, Ian Chamberlain and Alan Shoesmith began their musical association as members of a very diverse and unique acoustic quartet called Cedar & Spruce. After many live performances and the creation of two albums together the ensemble dissolved during the fall of 2007 when their mandolin player Jeff Cardey suddenly relocated to Europe.

During the winter of 2008 Alan Shoesmith began work on a series of original compositions that appeared to build on the sound that Cedar & Spruce had created on their final album "beyond 9 mile". It didn't take long before Chamberlain and Shoesmith began to slowly build the framework for a number of these tracks in the studio. During brief visits to Toronto between 2008 & 2011 Jeff Cardey managed to fit in a couple of intense recording sessions at Shoesmith's studio in Maple, Ontario. Originally plans were made to release an EP but the project continued to grow until there were enough recordings for a 12 track album.

The "Shoesmith, Chamberlain & Cardey" album showcases Alan Shoesmith's melodically and harmonically rich instrumental compositions. The trio draws from a large palette of stringed instruments in order to create their multi-layered texture. The creativity and personality of each player is highlighted through the interplay between their parts along with captivating improvisations. The music is inspired partly by Canadian rural scenes, Shoesmith's personal memories and the recent passing of several important guitarists that include Jeff Healey, Herb Ellis and Les Paul. The overall sound of Shoesmith, Chamberlain & Cardey blends stylistic elements drawn from folk, jazz, impressionism, blues, latin, bluegrass and rock.
